Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Development Associate is responsible for participating in the creation and leading the implementation and management of two annual giving appeals, maintaining and analyzing DPT’s donor CRM, and managing a timely and effective stewardship process. This position also provides support to other members of the development team for grant writing, board and committee relations, and special events, as well as maintaining the department calendar of mailings, events, grants, etc. The Development Associate reports directly to the Associate Director of Development and the Producing Artistic Director overseeing development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Annual Appeal & Individual Giving
Collaborate alongside development team and committee members in the creation of engaging, original annual campaign concepts for Fall and Spring
Build, implement, and schedule effective annual appeal process and materials (print, email and social media),
Arrange, schedule, and process materials for board involvement
Present appeal results to development team and committee following the end of each appeal
Manage acknowledgement materials and process for individual donors
Compile donor information and regularly notify development team and select board members of new gifts
Research
Research prospective individual donors
Prepare materials and donor summaries for leadership asks
Research and troubleshoot PatronManager functions to customize donation processes for appeals, ticket purchases, and Cash Bash contributions
Data Management & Analysis
Manage and maintain the accuracy of contacts and accounts in PatronManager
Log donations and donor information for gifts in PatronManager
Create and execute reports to create lists for mailings, emails, invitations, board contact lists, prospecting, and other development materials as required
Research and implement PatronManager customization methods to streamline reporting and material assembly
Board
Assist with materials prep for quarterly board meetings and recurring fundraising committee meetings
Assist with board and committee correspondence and communication
Record minutes at board meetings; distribute to board secretary
Grants
Support in grant proofing, reporting, and materials generation as requested
Manage acknowledgement materials and process for institutional donors and corporate donors
Events
Manage Cash Bash committee meeting schedule creation and implementation
Attend Cash Bash committee meetings and take minutes
Support the planning and execution of DPT’s Annual Unabashed Ask for Cash Bash
Support the planning and execution of donor stewardship events alongside development team and development committee members
Annual Report
Assist with research and collaborate with marketing department, development team, and PADs to create DPT’s first annual report

This position is part of the Applebaum Internship Program, a collaborative initiative that brings together host organizations, professional supervisors, and student interns to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. Interns will work directly with Detroit Public Theatre's Associate General Manager and General & Production Manager, gaining insight into what it takes to run a professional theatre. Projects may include box office management, inventory and facility management, theatre production, and overall company operations. This partnership connects interns with a larger cohort of peers and mentors, fostering professional development and collaboration within a network of arts organizations.

Schedule
June 1, 2026- July 24, 2026
This position offers a flexible schedule that may vary week to week based on the theatre’s production and event calendar. A minimum of 25 hours per week is guaranteed, with hours potentially increasing during busy periods, such as productions and special events, and decreasing during quieter weeks over the summer.
Important dates
Required to attend Applebaum Internship Program Leadership Sessions occurring in person, every other week starting June 11, 2026.
Workplace
This is a hybrid position, with a minimum of two days per week required in person. The workspace has free and metered street parking available, a kitchenette, and is fully accessible.
Compensation
Interns will receive a total stipend of $3,000 for the internship, paid in equal biweekly installments throughout the internship period.
Dress code
The dress code is generally casual—jeans, t-shirts, and similar attire are fine. Many staff wear Detroit Public Theatre-branded apparel, and you will receive a theatre T-shirt to wear to work. For external meetings, staff typically dress in business casual attire.
Travel and parking
The theatre is located a few blocks from QLine stops and several bus routes. Please note that after June 7, there will be no dedicated staff parking lot available.
Accommodations
The theatre is fully accessible. The office includes a second-floor loft that is only accessible by stairs. Please let us know if you require accommodations, and we will work with you to support your needs.

Join Detroit Public Theatre (DPT) for a hands-on, immersive Summer Marketing Internship, where you’ll gain real-world experience in theatre marketing, branding, audience engagement, and digital content creation. This internship is part of the Applebaum Internship Program, a collaborative initiative that brings together host organizations, professional supervisors, and student interns to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.
This internship offers the opportunity to work closely with the Marketing Assistant, developing and executing marketing strategies for DPT’s upcoming Season 12 and brand awareness campaigns.
Ideal for students interested in arts marketing, digital media, PR, and audience development, this role provides practical experience in content creation, social media management, branding, and analytics within a dynamic regional theatre environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in external communications, including social media content creation, email newsletters, and website updates.
Support brand messaging initiatives by helping craft marketing materials, social media campaigns, and promotional outreach.
Create engaging visual and written content for DPT’s marketing platforms, including print and digital materials.
Collaborate with the Marketing Assistant to execute strategic marketing campaigns for Season 12.
Conduct market research and audience analysis to support data-driven marketing strategies.
Participate in photo and video content creation, including capturing behind-the-scenes moments for promotional use.
Provide general support in graphic design, website management, and advertising coordination.
Minimum Skills & Qualifications
Strong writing and content creation skills for social media, web, and print.
Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Threads, YouTube).
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
Interest in theatre, marketing, digital media, or communications.
Familiarity with scheduling tools (MavSocial).
Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) or Canva is a plus.
Strong organizational and research skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
